FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Illinois Funeral Directors Association Addresses Concerns Over Crematory Practices

Springfield, IL – February 21, 2025 – The Illinois Funeral Directors Association (IFDA) was contacted on Monday, February 17, 2025, by a concerned citizen regarding the observed handling and condition of human remains, as well as conditions at an Illinois crematory. IFDA’s legal counsel promptly engaged the individual to discuss these concerns. That same day, IFDA counsel formally reported the matter to Illinois state regulators, filing a complaint regarding the alleged mishandling of human remains. Additionally, on Thursday, February 20, IFDA counsel spoke with the Illinois Comptroller’s office, which is responsible for regulating crematories in Illinois, to emphasize the seriousness of the issue and the need for regulatory follow-up.

The IFDA is deeply shocked and angered by the reported mishandling of the decedents and took immediate action to notify the appropriate authorities. It is important to note that Heights Crematory, which has been in the news, is not an IFDA member. Furthermore, Clark Morgan, the owner is not a licensed funeral director in Illinois. The dedicated and conscientious funeral directors within our association extend their deepest sympathies to the families affected by these distressing allegations. The Illinois Funeral Directors Association has always upheld—and will continue to uphold—the highest standards of care for the deceased and compassion for the bereaved.

As Illinois’ largest and oldest funeral service organization, IFDA has proudly served families for more than 144 years. Our members are committed professionals who dedicate their lives to supporting grieving families with dignity and respect. The alleged misconduct at the crematory in question does not reflect the values, dedication, or ethical standards upheld by IFDA. Our association remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the highest levels of integrity and professionalism in funeral service.

At IFDA, integrity is at the core of everything we do.
