Jay is the fourth generation of the Smith family to be a licensed funeral director. He joined the funeral home after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2009. He also attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Jay grew up in Palatine and attended St. Theresa Catholic School before moving to Glenview where he graduated from Loyola Academy. Community involvement is very important to Jay, as he is involved in many local organizations including being on the board of the University of Notre Dame Club of Chicago and Scholarship Foundation, President of SSA #62 in Sauganash, the Knights of Columbus Holy Ghost Council, and Past President of the Northeastern Illinois Funeral Directors Association.
