By Illinois law, funeral directors and embalmers are required to obtain 24 hours of continuing education every two year period. IFDA provides a schedule of programs so licensees can complete their continuing education requirements. IFDA only tracks hours obtained from IFDA sponsored programs for licensees. Licensees can obtain half of their continuing education requirements through self-study courses.
The current continuing education period ends May 31, 2013. Funeral directors and embalmers licensed prior to June 1, 2009 must receive 24 hours of continuing education. 12 of these hours can be received through home study. Funeral director only licensees must obtain 12 hours of continuing education, 6 of which can be received via home study.
