By Illinois law, funeral directors and embalmers are required to obtain 24 hours of continuing education every two year period. IFDA provides a schedule of programs so licensees can complete their continuing education requirements. IFDA only tracks hours obtained from IFDA sponsored programs for licensees. Licensees can obtain half of their continuing education requirements through self-study courses.
The current continuing education period ends May 31, 2015. Funeral directors and embalmers licensed prior to June 1, 2009 must receive 24 hours of continuing education. A funeral director/embalmer can earn up to 12 hours of continuing education through home study. A funeral director can earn up to 6 hours. IFDA has a number of self-study courses which licensees may register for at any time. The course must be completed and returned to IFDA within six months of the registration date, and cannot be repeated. See below for the most current listing of courses offered.
